Flying from the US

Nonstop
Delta flies New York JFK to Malta three times a week from June to October, on a Boeing 767-300ER. It is the only nonstop flight between the US and Malta.
2026 season
7 June to 23 October. The flight left JFK at 17:00 on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays and landed in Malta at 08:20 the next morning. The return left Malta at 10:20 on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays and landed at JFK at 14:50.
2027 season
Delta has filed the route again from 6 June 2027, three times a week on the same aircraft.
Flight time
About 9 hours 20 minutes to Malta and 10 hours 30 minutes back, at the 2026 times.
One stop
London, Frankfurt, Munich, Rome, Istanbul, Amsterdam, Paris and Zurich all have daily flights to Malta through the winter, so groups from anywhere in the US connect once in Europe.
Arrival
Malta International Airport is about 15 minutes from Valletta and 20 minutes from the hotels in St Julian’s by coach.

Entry, time and money

Visa
US citizens need no visa for stays of up to 90 days in any 180 days in the Schengen Area, which Malta joined in 2007.
Passport
Valid for at least three months after leaving the EU, and issued within the previous ten years.
At the border
The EU’s Entry/Exit System has run in full since 10 April 2026. On a first entry, visitors give four fingerprints and a photo, and passports are no longer stamped. Children under 12 are not fingerprinted.
ETIAS
The EU’s ETIAS travel authorisation has not started, and the EU has not announced its start date. Once it runs, it will cost €20 and last three years.
Time
Malta is six hours ahead of New York, seven ahead of Chicago and nine ahead of Los Angeles. For a few weeks in March and at the end of October the gap is an hour shorter, because Europe and the US change their clocks on different dates.
Money and power
Malta uses the euro. The power is 230 volts, with the same three-pin plugs as Britain.
Language
Maltese and English are both official languages.
