Xwejni Salt Pans

The Xwejni salt pans are on Gozo’s north coast, just west of Marsalforn. The pans are cut into the rock along the shore and run for several kilometres. They are divided between three salt farmers. One family, Leli tal-Melħ, has worked its pans for five generations.

Sea water is left in the pans to evaporate, and the salt is swept up and packed by hand. The harvest runs from mid-May to early September, about once a week, when the weather is hot and dry.

Events at the salt pans are by permit only. We set them up for groups regularly.

A set-up for 300 guests

The film shows the salt pans set up for an incentive group of 300 from France.
